Sclerotherapy
The aim of the treatment is to remove unsightly and often perfectly visible changes in the veins, which often cause discomfort in the patient’s everyday life.
The effects of sclerotherapy
Valued in medicine, non-surgical, and therefore less invasive sclerotherapy treatment helps patients with venous diseases. It is most often used in the treatment of small varicose veins or intradermal venous extensions, so-called vascular spider veins. During the procedure, directly into the affected vessels, a special preparation is administered causing their closure and ultimately the exclusion from the system. The result is a reduction in the varicose vein treated (ceases to be patent – i.e. filled with blood) and then absorbed by the body.
What does the sclerotherapy treatment look like?
Removal of varicose veins by sclerotherapy is a quite simple procedure in the course and treatment is rather short-term. The doctor, using a special, thin needle, introduces a suitable preparation into the patient’s vein, which almost immediately causes the vein to shrink. The dose is adjusted individually to the needs of the patient and the particular varicose vein being treated. We use two types of preparation – a substance in the form of a solution – small varicose veins and spider veins, or in the form of foam – a disease of larger blood vessels. The number of punctures is determined by the extent of change. Usually it is from a few to a dozen or so to pierce. The use of very thin needles for the treatment makes the treatment next to its high effectiveness is also painless. It should be added that sclerotherapy, like any dermatosurgical procedure, is preceded by a thorough consultation of a specialist in the field of dermatosurgery. He/She checks patient’s condition and the possibility of contraindications to perform the procedure.
The duration of the sclerotherapy treatment
The treatment lasts from 15 to 30 minutes.
The recovery period after the treatment
The recovery time depends on the individual characteristics of the patient and compliance with the doctor’s instructions. For the limb treated, after sclerotherapy, a special compression product should be worn, eg a stocking with a second degree of pressure. In places, puncture the pressure can be increased by using cotton wool or dressing pads. Compression should be used continuously for the first 24 hours, and the patient should walk for a minimum of 30 minutes just after the treatment. Depending on the size of the vessel being treated and its location, you should wear a tourniquet from a few days to three weeks. The doctor decides on the length of this period.
The compression therapy is used to:
- obtaining the smallest possible intravascular clots,
- treating or preventing side effects (e.g. phlebitis, discoloration),
- prophylaxis of thromboembolic episodes in high risk patients.
The duration of the effects
The permanent therapeutic effect can be obtained by following the instructions of the specialist physician after the surgery. Some patients decide to repeat the procedure in order to obtain more satisfying results.
Contraindications
- pregnancy,
- breastfeeding period,
- polidocanol sensitization.
